It’s a showdown between No. 13 Iowa and No. 2 Michigan in the Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday in Indianapolis, where Iowa is 10-2 overall and 7-2 in the conference.

It will begin at Lucas Oil Stadium at 7:17 p.m. on Saturday when the Big Ten West and East champions meet. FOX will broadcast the game. Both teams are aiming to win their first Big Ten Championship since 2004 when they tied for the title. The Hawkeyes are looking to win the Big Ten title for the first time since 1985.

Iowa vs. Michigan series history

The Wolverines and Hawkeyes have a 42-15-4 record against each other. The series began in 1900 with an Iowa victory of 28-5.

The two teams will meet for the fourth time on Saturday, with Michigan ranked No. 2 in the nation. A walk-off field goal helped Iowa win two of those games. After defeating Michigan 12-10 in 1985, the top-ranked Hawkeyes went on to win the national championship.

Former Hawkeye Keith Duncan’s game-winning field goal helped Iowa defeat No. 2 Michigan 14-13 in the first meeting between Ferentz and Harbaugh as head coaches in Iowa City.

Harbaugh’s seven years at Iowa have resulted in a 1-1 record against Michigan.

Iowa has a 5-1 record against Michigan in the last seven meetings. Michigan and Ohio State were scheduled to play during “Champions Week” in 2014 but were canceled due to positive COVID-19 cases within the Wolverine program.

How Iowa would compare to past champions

Since the conference realigned ahead of the 2014 season, no Big Ten West team has ever won the Big Ten championship game. In the last seven seasons, Ohio State has won the conference five times, including the last four.

Both Michigan State and Penn State have won the Big Ten Championship Game only once.

The only time Iowa has appeared in the championship game, it fell to Michigan State by a three-point margin.

Only four times have Wisconsin, Northwestern, and Iowa all been a part of an East-West Big Ten Championship Game since the East-West format was introduced. Michigan has never represented the East before.

Since 2014, Big Ten Championship Game winners have qualified for the College Football Playoff four times out of seven times (Ohio State three times and Michigan State once).

Penn State went to the Rose Bowl in 2016 after defeating Wisconsin. The Nittany Lions missed out on the postseason because of two defeats during the regular season. There was a similar situation in 2017 and 2018 when the Buckeyes won the conference championship and were sent to the Cotton and Rose Bowls.

If Iowa beats 10.5-point favorite Michigan, it will become the first Big Ten champion since 2014 with the lowest-scoring team. This season, the Hawkeyes have scored 25.7 points on average per game.

Michigan State, which won its seventh straight Big Ten championship in 2015, averaged the fewest points per game of any of the previous six champions.

When Penn State won the championship, it scored an average of 37.6 points per game. A minimum of 40 points has been scored by every Ohio State championship team since 2014. As for Iowa’s defensive prowess, it would be ranked second among Big Ten champions during that period.

There are only two teams in the country that allow more points per game than Iowa this season: Ohio State (13.7 points per game) and the 2019 Wolverines (17.2 points per game).

Attendees are invited to the National I-Club from 4:30-6:30 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, August 17, one block away from Lucas Oil Stadium, where the game between Iowa and Michigan will begin at 8:17 p.m (ET).

This year’s Big Ten Championship Hawkeye Huddle has been expanded to include an on-site DJ, food and drink concessions as well as door prizes.

The Big Ten Fan Fest will also be held at the Indiana Convention Center.
