Nurse Trixie, played by Helen George, has made an early Christmas present for Call the Midwife fans.
She has returned to the BBC One/PBS medical drama for the Call the Midwife Holiday Special and Season 12 after taking a break midway through Season 11 to care for her second child. Photos of her recent return to the show’s social media accounts were shared.
This year’s Christmas special will be aired on December 25, while the new season will premiere in the UK and the United States in 2023, several months apart.
This time around, the fan-favorite character returns to the show after a leave of absence to care for her ailing godmother in Italy. Trixie and Matthew Aylward (played by The Spanish Princess Olly Rix) had just started dating and becoming closer at the time of this. The two of them even shared a passionate kiss. Those who eagerly awaited Trixie’s return can now watch their romance blossom and develop into something more serious.
The return of George isn’t the only reason to celebrate for viewers. Stephen McGann, who plays Dr. Patrick Turner, is seen in another picture holding a baby. Because of Dr. Turner’s arm injury in the season finale, producers have confirmed that COVID protocols that had previously prohibited actors from close contact with infants have been lifted.
A medical necessity, the show explained on Facebook and Instagram, “was a real challenge for a birth drama like ours. Two years ago, we had to completely rethink the way we shot birth scenes, and our cast had to learn to work with the new, longer-distance equipment. The first birth scene to film in this episode provided Stephen with an opportunity to meet his first young star in two years.”
