Gene Curran Kelly, an American actor, was born in East Liberty, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on August 23, 1912. Beginning his professional life at an early age, Gene Kelly taught dance. For Me and My Gal, a 1942 musical, marked his first appearance in a major motion picture in the part of Harry Palmer.

With the dance anthology film Invitation to the Dance (1956), he made his directorial debut and appeared in the picture as The Clown, The Marine, and Sinbad. In the episode “The Life You Save” from the 1957 season of the CBS anthology series Schlitz Playhouse, he made his television debut.

Cover Girl, a romantic comedy film, was Gene’s first significant role. He played the lead, Danny McGuire (1944). His first Broadway part was in the chorus of “Leave It to Me!” (1938–1939) at the Imperial Theatre when he made his Broadway debut.
