CLEMSON — In the Orange and White Game, offences were as sluggish as the temperature outside was pleasant.
Clemson’s spring football season ended with a 15-7 victory for White over Orange in Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon as the wind and temperatures plummeted into the 40s.
The White squad gained a total of minus-17 yards on the ground during the first half. Rushing for a loss of 18 points. No one could get more than two yards on each carry, even if you don’t include the 13 sacks that were recorded. There were also three interceptions for the White team’s K.J. Henry. The Orange team had three sacks from Myles Murphy.
Both teams scored touchdowns of 18 and 10 yards. Field goal attempts totaled 15, three, and zero.
Henry stated, “I expect that from us every time we take the field.” “… We are aware of our resources.”

D.j. Uiagalelei Still Shaky, Still Starter
D.J. Uiagalelei, Clemson’s quarterback, had lost roughly 25 pounds, but he still looked like the same guy.
He got off to a shaky start, completing just three of his first fifteen passes. When he had the ball in his hands, he wasn’t particularly deft. The majority of his attempts ended in a fumble.
An interception by him in the fourth quarter resulted to a game-winning touchdown for the opposite team. Even though Clemson won 10 games last year, he was beset by these issues.

Uiagalelei, meanwhile, displayed glimpses of his extraordinary abilities. When Joseph Ngata was in close coverage, Dabo Swinney had instructed officials to rule an interception because the defence had rushed in but had not been permitted to hit the quarterback.
He threw a great pass. Still, the offensive highlight of the scrimmage was this play. ‘
Although frustrating, Uiagalelei continues to annoy. His job is not going anywhere.
“We can safely say that D.J. will be our starting quarterback “Swinney mentioned this. “He’s had a fantastic season. No one can accuse him of intentionally sabotaging his chances of being the starter. Cade Klubnik, a first-year player, is a talented one.
I believe we have two players who, like Trevor Lawrence and D.J., will be ready to compete at the highest level in the spring of (2020). How often do you get to say that? Then again, both of those individuals have shown me enough to know that.”
Thinned-out Offense Didn’t Have Shot
When Clemson divides its team into two halves to simulate an actual game with real scoring, the result is generally an entertaining spring game. This time, though, it did not work.
For one thing, Clemson’s defence is a lot deeper than the offence and has a lot of NFL potential. Injuries notwithstanding, the offence was simply too thin to perform well when split in half. When it came to scrimmaging offensive linemen, Jordan McFadden (Dorman High School) and Walker Parks (Dorman High School) were absent.
It worked out, Swinney said. “We put 11 on the field so that everyone who could play could be evaluated. Today’s team was woefully deficient.”
It might have been better to play regular offence versus regular defence and devise a scoring system that awards points for sacks, three-and-outs, and so on. Uncomplicated, yet logical. It’s more fun than an actual game.
Clemson Punting Job Remains Tba
Last week, Swinney said he had no idea if the punter would be Aidan Swanson, a junior, or B.T. Potter, a senior.
You understand now, Swinney said.
Swanson averaged 45.5 yards on six punts, hit one for 55 yards, and landed four punts inside the 20-yard line. He kicked a 53-yarder and averaged 42.3 yards per attempt, which he hopes to add to his place-kicking duties.
Both of their snaps resulted in touchdowns. The game’s first possession ended with Potter’s fumble at the 11-yard line.
“That’s the play you’ve got to make. Swinney remarked, “And then Aidan goes out there and he muffs one.” “… The one thing I’m unsure of heading into spring is who will run out to be the punter first. Our task there is urgent. There is no doubt that our snappers will be excellent. But I believe we need to make that clear.”
Quick Hits From Clemson Scrimmage
Senior offensive lineman Will Putnam, who is moving from guard to center, took almost every snap for the Orange team quarterbacked by Uiagalelei. Swinney joked recently that Putman, while improving every day, is also good for one bad snap per day.
He had none in the scrimmage. … As expected, safety Andrew Mukuba also played cornerback. Clemson is thin at that position this spring, but Mukuba could be a regular as a shutdown corner. …. Freshman defensive backs Sherrod Covil Jr. and Toriano Pride Jr. showed why they’re getting such rave reviews from teammates and coaches.
Covil had an interception and ran it back 31 yards to the 10, setting up the game-winning TD throw by Klubnik. Pride made seven tackles, tied with Barrett Carter and Keith Maguire for the Orange team lead.
Pride had two tackles for loss. … Memorial Stadium is under additional construction as suites in the West End Zone are upgraded and a bigger scoreboard added to the East side. The Tigers were not able to run down the hill and Howard’s Rock is in safekeeping.
