When the Doctor regenerates, Doctor Who also regenerates, evolving into something new. The return of Russell T Davies, the TV legend who made Doctor Who popular again with his 2005 revival, brings a certain familiarity with the end of Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chibnall’s period.
The Whovian fandom has never been more excited for a new season, but what can we realistically anticipate from the program moving forward? We look ahead to what’s to come in Doctor Who season 14.

Ncuti Gatwa’s adventure will occur after the Doctor Who 60th-anniversary specials. These will be three episodes headed by returning showrunner Russell T Davies and featuring David Tennant and Catherine Tate in the lead roles and will premiere around the sci-fi series’ 60th anniversary in mid-November 2023.
Doctor Who Season 14 Cast
Ncuti Gatwa plays The Doctor and Millie Gibson plays Ruby Sunday in Doctor Who season 14—New Doctor Who companion Ruby Sunday. Since production began, more cast members have been announced.
The Doctor Who season 14 cast list:
- Ncuti Gatwa as The 15th Doctor
- Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday
- Jonathan Groff as an unnamed character
- Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart
- Aneurin Barnard as Roger ap Gwilliam
- Anita Dobson as Mrs. Flood
- Jack Forsyth-Noble as Will
- Bonnie Langford as Mel Bush
- Michelle Greenidge as an unnamed character.
- Jinkx Monsoon as an unnamed villain

What Occurs in Season 14 of Doctor Who?
The plot of Doctor Who Season 14 will contain classic time-travel adventures as The Doctor and Ruby Sunday face new foes across space and time.
The Doctor and Ruby Sunday will travel to the 1960s in one episode, and Jonathan Groff’s character will travel even further in another. Gatwa and Gibson look great in official photos of these activities.
We expect the Doctor to investigate the de-regeneration in the 60th-anniversary specials before season 14. After those specials, Tennant will likely regenerate into Gatwa’s Doctor, and season 14 could examine the repercussions. Davies has also stated that his Doctor Who period will address social and political themes, including climate change. That’s not new.
Doctor Who Season 14: How Many Episodes?
RTD confirmed 8 episodes and a Christmas special for Doctor Who season 14—previous seasons had more episodes. The return to a Christmas special would delight series lovers.
RTD also confirmed that Doctor Who will return annually with no production pauses. Since new series will show more often, 8-episode seasons won’t reduce Doctor Who programming.
