Enlisting in the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman in 1956 allowed him to finish high school through correspondence courses.
During his time at Temple University in 1961, Cosby received a track and field scholarship, which allowed him to pursue a degree in physical education while he ran track and played football.
Cosby’s sense of humor was honed during his time in the military and in college, where he told jokes to his peers and professors alike.
When he started working as a bartender in a Philadelphia nightclub to make some extra money, he realized he had a gift for making people laugh and began entertaining his patrons.

Cosby dropped out of college to focus on his comedic career. He started with a lot of stand-up gigs in Philadelphia and New York City, but he went on to perform in several other major US cities.
