Meg 2 is bringing a massive bloody shark back to our screens this year, and we’re not afraid to say we’re excited. While the first film was not a critical triumph, it was a massive box office success, grossing more than $500 million worldwide. As a result, executive producer Catherine Xujun Ying announced a sequel in November 2018.
We’ve had to wait a long for the sequel, officially named Meg 2: The Trench, to be on our screens, but it’s been shot and will seek to take a bite out of the competition when it hits theaters in August. So, in the meantime, here’s everything you need to know about Meg 2.

Meg 2 The Trench Release Date
Meg 2: The Trench is scheduled to be released in theaters on August 4, 2023, five years after the release of the original Meg film, provided that there are no unforeseen setbacks. You can see the tweet below:

Filming took place between February and May of 2022, so unless Warner Bros. needs to adjust its schedule, we should be reunited with some huge sharks in August as originally intended if everything goes according to plan.
Meg 2 The Trench Cast
It goes without saying that Jason Statham will reprise his role as the recently disgraced rescue diver Jonas Taylor, but Li Bingbing won’t be back to play his love interest, Suyin, in the upcoming installment.
Cliff Curtis, Shuya Sophia Cai, and Page Kennedy will all be making a comeback, although in their previous roles as James “Mac” Mackreides, Meiying, and DJ, respectively.
Skyler Samuels, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, and Wu Jing, who is currently the highest-grossing male actor in the history of Chinese cinema, are among the new cast members appearing in the sequel.
Ben Wheatley is the man responsible for the behind-the-scenes direction of the sequel, which was written by the same team who penned the original film: Dean Georgaris, Erich Hoeber, and Jon Hoeber.

Meg 2 The Trench Trailer
The first trailer for Meg 2: The Trench has just been released, giving us our first look at Jason Statham’s character, Jonas, as he explores the ocean below with his team and discovers a huge Meg, before dozens of other animals come out from the depths with it and transform happy beach visitors into monster snacks. Meg 2 The Trench Plot
An official synopsis has been revealed, confirming Wheatley’s April 2021 tease that there may be more big sharks in the sequel.
For the time being, that’s all we know, while aspects from Steve Alten’s novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror (the inspiration for the first film) and the book sequel The Trench could be incorporated. The original film, however, was not an accurate version of the book because it included a pregnant megalodon.
In the book’s sequel, Jonas is looking after that shark’s progeny, which has now grown to monstrous proportions, resulting in another confrontation between shark and man when Jonas seeks assistance from an eccentric billionaire.
