Charles Coronation Schedule: Celebrations Across The United Kingdom

Millions of people will be watching King Charles’ coronation on May 6th, whether out of love for Britain’s monarchy or a fascination with the country’s most recognizable family. Following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, last September, the newly appointed sovereign ascended to the throne. He will now be crowned alongside Camilla, Queen Consort, in a symbolic ceremony at Westminster Abbey led by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

The following day will be filled with festivities, including street parties and an evening concert. Pubs and bars in the United Kingdom will be allowed to stay open for two extra hours, and Monday will be a national holiday. According to Buckingham Palace, the event will be modernized to reflect the monarchy’s current role while retaining the “longstanding traditions and pageantry” seen at Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953. When the event begins next month, a guest list of 2,200 people will be able to see what’s in store up close and personal. Let’s see the details of Charles’s Coronation Schedule.

Saturday, May 6

King and Queen Consort’s coronation, 11 a.m. Charles will accompany Camilla from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey, where monarchs have been crowned for 900 years. “The King’s Procession” is their route. The Diamond Jubilee State Coach, with air conditioning and electric windows, will transport the royal couple. Unlike Queen Elizabeth’s three-hour event, the coronation will begin at 11 a.m. local time and last just over an hour.

Charles will sit in the Coronation Chair, or Edward’s Chair, in the Abbey and hold the sovereign’s scepter, a gold rod with amethyst monde, diamonds, rubies, spinels, and emeralds, symbolizing national control. He will also have the sovereign’s orb, a golden cross-topped globe. The Telegraph reported that Charles would be asked during the ceremony if he would govern the U.K. and other Commonwealth nations with law and justice and maintain Christianity.

The monarch also defends all faiths and includes other religious groups in the big event to reflect a more diverse Britain. Charles will be anointed with chrism oil made in Jerusalem in March from olives from two Mount of Olives monasteries, Mary Magdalene and the Ascension. After the Archbishop blesses and consecrates him, St Edward’s Crown—a solid gold headpiece with over 400 gemstones, including rubies and sapphires—will be placed on his head. Queen Mary’s Crown, set with Queen Elizabeth II’s Cullinan III, IV, and V diamonds, will crown Camilla.

The Imperial State Crown will replace this crown before the ceremony ends. After being crowned, Charles wants the Byzantine Chant Ensemble to play Greek Orthodox music in honor of his late father, Prince Philip, who was born in Greece to the German House of Glücksburg and was a prince of Greece and Denmark. After this, musical theater legend Andrew Lloyd Webber was commissioned to write the coronation anthem, one of 12 pieces the King selected.

The King’s Procession Begins at 2 pm

Following the ceremony, Charles and Camilla will depart Westminster Abbey in the Gold State Coach and return to Buckingham Palace via “The Coronation Procession.” The public will likely line the streets along the route of the procession to catch a glimpse of the newly crowned monarch. The royal family is then expected to appear on the balcony of the palace and wave to the crowd.

Sunday, May 7 Coronation Big Lunch

After the coronation, communities are encouraged to host neighborhood lunches and street parties. Camilla has supported the Eden Project’s Big Lunch since 2013. The project aims to reduce loneliness and foster community. The King and Queen “personally selected” French-inspired spinach, broad bean, cheese, and tarragon quiche for their Coronation.
