As of July 4, 2022, the Mexican city of MONTERREY is expected to host the 2022 Summer Olympics. Monday night at Estadio Universitario in Miami, the U.S. Women’s National Team began their Concacaf W Championship campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over Haiti. The Americans began their quest to qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Olympic Games on July 4th when forward Alex Morgan scored twice just before the half and another late in the second.
On Thursday, July 7, the USWNT will face Jamaica (7 p.m. ET, Paramount+ and ViX) before facing Mexico on Monday, July 11 to finish Group A play (10 p.m. ET)
Second, only to Pele in U.S. history, Morgan scored two goals in a single game for the first time in her career, making it her 29th multi-goal game in a row. Since the 2018 World Cup Qualifying, she has scored five times in a row in Concacaf Qualifying matches for the USWNT, extending her goal-scoring streak to 21 goals in 21 appearances.
For the first time in her career, Purce netted a goal in qualifying, making her debut alongside eight other American players.
The US Women’s National Team has now won 29 straight qualifying matches without conceding a goal. On November 5, 2010, against Mexico, the United States conceded its last goal in World Cup or Olympic qualifying.
Even though both teams struggled in the first 90 minutes due to the sweltering 99-degree heat at kickoff, Haiti posed the first real threat in the seventh minute. Sherly Jeudy fired a 30-yard freekick over the United States defense. There is no doubt in my mind that Kethna Louis would have been penalized for offside had she scored the goal in a tournament that is using video assistant referees for the first time.
As a result, two American goals and a likely penalty kick were correctly waved away for offside, and Roselord Borgella’s red card was somehow overturned and reduced from red to yellow despite her high kick on Kelley O’Hara in the middle of the pitch with her cleats up.
The United States maintained their composure to come within one goal of a first-half lead when Morgan’s header hit the crossbar from Sophia Smith’s right-wing corner in the 11th minute.
Mallory Pugh’s cross from the right-wing setup Morgan’s first goal for the USWNT since October 26, 2021, five minutes later when she flicked the ball into the near post with a heel flick. Midway through the first half, Morgan doubled the lead with a superb header from seven yards out.
With their collective heads held high, the Haitian team did make threats. Casey Murphy, the U.S. goalkeeper, came off her line and snuffed out Melchie Dumornay’s shot in the 27th minute after a neat step-over at the top of the penalty box.
Nérilia Mondésir was found unmarked on the right side of the penalty area by another Dumornay attack. The sliding Emily Fox of the United States defense tripped her up inside the box. When VAR confirmed the call, the ref didn’t hesitate to point it out. It was Borgella’s turn to take the penalty kick, but her shot hit the post and rebounded right back to her. The play was stopped as soon as she touched the ball, thanks to the ref.
Three more times in the second half would VAR be used. VAR disallowed Morgan’s goal because she was offside when she blasted a shot from the left side of the box.
Jennifer Limage took down Pugh in the box in the 58th minute for a 100% penalty, but VAR determined that Pugh was offside when she received the ball, so she did not receive a penalty.
While Haiti played a low 4-2-4 defensive block, making it difficult for the USA to find space in the attacking third, the United States kept creating chances. Ashley Sanchez, who came on as a substitute in the 59th minute, had a shot from the right side that flew through the penalty area and rolled wide in the 62nd minute.
Megan Rapinoe, who came on in the 74th minute, was the recipient of a perfectly weighted ball from Andi Sullivan, a U.S. midfielder, fifteen minutes later. When Rapinoe turned and lifted a beautiful chip to the far post, Midge Purce was able to finish it off in one shot. Rapinoe was found to be in the wrong place at the wrong time by VAR, who ruled that she was offside when she first received the ball.
After Haiti goalkeeper Lara Larco saved Purce’s second attempt, she finally buried a chance from 12 yards out in the 84th minute to seal the victory.
Scoring Summary
Pugh received the ball from Morgan after a 12-pass sequence that culminated in her receiving the ball on the right-wing. Following the creation of space, Pugh sent a low cross to Morgan, who deflected the ball into her net for her 116th USWNT goal. The United States defeats the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, 1 to 0.
Second-half goal: Alex Morgan (Kelley O’Hara), 23rd minute: Pugh’s free-kick was saved by the Haitian defenders, but O’Hara picked up the loose ball and threw it into the box for Morgan. Haiti’s Lara Larco made the save, but Morgan headed the ball over her head and under the crossbar from seven yards out to make it 2-0. The United States defeated HAI 2-0.
A cross from midfielder Kristie Mewis was headed away by center-back Kethna Louis in the 84th minute for an own goal by the United States’ Midge Purce. For the fourth time in her career, Purce scored a goal after taking a touch to set up her right foot. The United States defeated HAI 3-0.
