Object Of The Game
During each round, the first player to use all of their cards earns points for the cards remaining in their opponents’ hands. The game ends when one player reaches 500 points.
Setup
A card is dealt with each player. The dealer is the player with the highest point total. Sort the cards and reshuffle them. Seven cards are dealt with each player.
Form a draw pile with the remaining cards by placing them face down. To start a discard pile, turn over the top card in the draw pile. Re-select another card if the top card is a Wild or a Wild Draw 4. See the instructions below for all other cards.
Special Cards
Draw 2 Card
After playing this card, the next player must draw two cards and forfeit their turn.

The first player must draw two cards if this card is drawn at the start of the play. Only cards of the same colour or another Draw 2 card can be used with this card.
Reverse Card
Changes the course of play. Passes to the right used to go to the left, but that has changed.
If this card is revealed at the start of the game, the player to the right now gets to play first and the game now proceeds from right to left instead of left to right.
Only cards of the same color can be used with this card.
Skip Card
After this card is played, the next person in line to play loses their turn and is “skipped.”
If this card is drawn at the start of the game, the first player (the one to the left of the dealer) is not allowed to play.
Only cards of the same colour or another Skip card can be used with this card.
Wild Card
This card allows you to continue the game by changing the colour of the card now being played to any other colour you choose. Any playable card in your hand can be used to play a Wild Card.
When this card is revealed at the start of the game, the player to the left of the dealer gets to choose the color of the deck and deal with the first card.
Wild Draw 4 Card
To use this card, you must choose the next color to be played and surrender your turn to the next player. With one exception!
As long as your hand doesn’t match the preceding card, you can use this card to your advantage. If this card is revealed before the game begins, shuffle it and draw a new card.
You can play a “Wild Draw Four” even if you already have a “Wild Draw Four” in your hand with the same number or word on it. Challenge a Wild Draw 4 card if you believe it was improperly used.
Players who are challenged must display their hands to the challenger. If the accused player is found guilty, the four cards must be dealt with him or her. If the challenged player is found not guilty, the challenger must draw four cards plus two additional cards from the pile.
The challenge can only be accepted by the person who is obliged to draw the four cards.
What’s the purpose of the extra cards?
Blank Card
There are two methods to use this special card. UNO Blank Card can be used to replace any card in your deck that has been lost or destroyed.
In the case where your deck is missing one of the yellow 7s, you can simply mark a “7” on the blank yellow card and put it back in the deck.

UNO rules can be written on the Blank Cards and added to the deck if your family prefers a particular method of play.
Game Play
The player to the left of the dealer is dealt first. To begin, the ball is passed to the left. It’s up to you to figure out how to match up the DISCARD pile’s top card.
Suppose the card is a Green 7, and you must play a Green card or a colour 7 of the same suit. Alternatively, you may choose to play any Wild card or a Wild Draw 4 card. The DRAW pile must be consulted if you do not have a card that matches. Whenever you draw a card that you can play with, do so immediately.
In this case, the game moves on to the next individual. You must say “UNO” before playing your final card before the round is over. It is your responsibility to draw FOUR additional cards from the DRAW pile before the next player begins their turn if you do not say UNO and another player manages to catch you with one card.
Unless the next player either draws a card from the DRAW pile or draws a card from their hand to play, you do not have to draw more cards. The hand is over when the final card is played by one of the players. When all the points have been collected (see the Scoring section), a new round begins.
Going Out
This means that even though you may have missed the opportunity by failing to announce “UNO,” you will not be penalised by the 4-card penalty because you “caught” yourself before any other player had the chance to.
You can’t catch a player for not saying “UNO!” until the second-to-last card in the discard pile touches the DISCARD pile. Also, if a player fails to mention it after the next player has begun his/her turn, you cannot catch him/her. Drawing a card from the DRAW pile or playing a card from your hand is considered “beginning a turn.”
The following player must draw 2 or 4 cards if the last card played is a Draw 2 card or Wild Draw 4. When the points are tallied, these cards are taken into account.
When the DRAW pile is empty, reshuffle the DISCARD pile and continue the game if no one has run out of cards.
Scoring
To win, you must be the first player to get rid of all of your cards, and any cards that remain in the hands of your opponents count toward your score. After each hand, note your score on the supplied score pad. The following is the value of each card:
All number cards (0-9) | Face Value |
---|---|
Draw 2 | 20 Points |
Reverse | 20 Points |
Skip | 20 Points |
Wild | 50 Points |
Wild Draw 4 | 50 Points |
Blank | ? |
Winner: The first person to accumulate 500 points in the game wins! As a result, it is possible to score a hand by calculating how many points each player has at the end of each hand.
At 500 points, the player with the lowest score is declared victorious.
Reneging
You have the option of not playing a playable card from your hand if you like. If this is the case, you must choose a card from the DRAW pile. If the card is playable, you can use it, but you cannot use a card from your hand after the draw.
