The fourth season of Virgin River has been completed and will premiere on Netflix in 2022. Production on Season 5 will begin in 2022, with the premiere date set for 2023. What do we know about Virgin River season 4 thus far? Here’s a recap of everything we know.
Editor’s note: Although this preview was first published in July 2021, it has been regularly updated to incorporate new information, most recently in February 2022.
Before we go into the future of the show, let’s take a look back at the past few episodes. Adapted from the Robyn Carr novels, Virgin River is a television series. An aspiring midwife and nurse practitioner from the big city, Mel relocates to a remote Northern California village for a fresh start.
Throughout the show’s three seasons, we’ve seen Mel meet a wide variety of people in the town as she establishes herself as a permanent resident.
Season 1 debuted on Netflix in December of 2019, with additional seasons arriving in November of 2020 and, most recently, in July of 2021 with the release of season 3.

Has Netflix Renewed Virgin River for Season 4?
The official status of the renewal: As of 7/26/2021, the contract has been renewed.
According to Netflix, the fourth season of the show will go ahead, and the fifth season will also be available on Netflix, USA Today reported on September 20th. Netflix seldom orders many seasons of a show, but this is a sign of the show’s success.
Even before the formal renewal announcement, we’ve been reporting on the existence of the fourth season of Virgin River.
Martin Henderson reacted to the announcement of a double renewal by saying:
“Yep. This is a reality. To finally share this news with those of you who’ve been patiently waiting is such a relief. Thank you to all of our devoted viewers, Virgin River Seasons 4 and 5 are now in the works. There’s still a lot of drama to come.
The following is what Colin Lawrence had to say on Instagram:
This is a huge accomplishment for us, and we’re very happy to share the news with you.” Please accept my heartfelt gratitude for all of your support.
Season 4 will be longer than prior seasons, as Colin said. In season 4, the number of episodes has been increased from 10 to 12.
According to several production listings, the show will return for a fourth season in 2021. More good news: Season 4 filming will begin at the end of July in 2021, according to a later announcement.
The entire show is filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Vernon Doc Tim Matheson was interviewed by RadioTimes Lauren Morris. Following the Season 3 premiere, we spoke with someone who corroborated our earlier claims that production would begin “any day now.”
We also learned that filming was taking place at Watershed Grill on August 17th and 18th, 2021, according to an Instagram post from the restaurant (and multiple times afterward).
The Watershed Grill serves as the setting for Jack’s bar in Virgin River, which is filmed there.
The Watershed Grill was used for additional filming between August 30th and September 2nd.
It had been speculated that filming will wind up on November 30th, 2021, but the show’s Instagram page now confirms that it has indeed concluded.
Many members of the cast and crew were given goody bags when the shoot was over.
One of the most important parts of the production process was completed in February 2022, Alexandra Breckenridge reported on Instagram.
In case you’re not familiar with the term, an ADR stands for an audio digital recording, and I just did one for Virgin River.
Breckenridge may have recorded extra lines or even re-recorded some of the lines from the concert in an audio booth during this step, which is known as “sound post.”
After sound post-production, we normally see new episodes of shows appear on Netflix within a few months, indicating that they will soon be available for streaming.
Hugh Jackman performing ADR for the movie Logan is an excellent example of how this works in practice.
How well did Virgin River season 3 do on Netflix?
If you are a fan of the show, you should not be surprised if the show gets renewed quickly. Seasons 2 and 3 were previously renewed in advance of their Netflix premieres. Even more so for the third season, which was recorded as season 2 was being released.
Netflix’s decision to order a second season of the show is now clear in light of recent top 10 ratings.
There were over 250,000 hours of viewing on the platform between July 4th and August 15th in 2021 for the show. This is according to newly revealed data. It was watched a total of 255,120,000 hours on Netflix throughout this period.
Period | Million Global Hours Viewed | Weeks in Top 10 |
---|---|---|
July 4th, 2021 to July 11th, 2021 | 62,580,000 | 1 |
July 11th, 2021 to July 18th, 2021 | 87,270,000 | 2 |
July 18th, 2021 to July 25th, 2021 | 44,890,000 | 3 |
July 25th, 2021 to August 1st, 2021 | 28,320,000 | 4 |
August 1st, 2021 to August 8th, 2021 | 18,840,000 | 5 |
August 8th, 2021 to August 15th, 2021 | 13,220,000 | 6 |
For a total of 75 days, the show has been in the top 10 of the US television ratings. A little over a month after the show’s debut, it fell out of the top 10 in the U.S. ratings for season 3.
It was also the most-watched show in Nielsen’s top 10s between July 12th and July 18th, with 2,109 million minutes seen, beating out Netflix’s Manifest and Disney+’s Loki in that period.
New cast members for Virgin River Season 4
It was confirmed by Netflix in late October 2021 that Virgin River would return for a fourth season in late October 2021.
Dr. Cameron Hayek will be played by Mark Ghanimé, best known for his time on Helix. With “eye-catching good looks, razor-sharp intellect, and a smile that could light the planet, Cameron makes an immediate sensation in town—especially with the ladies of Virgin River,” he is Virgin River’s newest physician.
Kai Bradbury, who will portray Denny Cutler, Doc’s long-lost grandson, is also in the cast. Denny has a secret to tell his grandfather, despite his best efforts to repair their relationship.
When will season 4 of Virgin River be on Netflix?
We shouldn’t have to wait a long time for the new season because filming started so early.
Nonetheless, don’t hold your breath for the fourth season to be released in 2021.
Instead, we presently expect Virgin River season 4 to return in 2022, most likely in the second or third quarters of that year (anywhere between April and July 2022).

What to expect from Virgin River season 4
In season 4, Mel’s big story is that she is pregnant, but the father hasn’t been revealed. When Season 4 concludes, we should find out.
After being jailed for the shooting of Jack at the end of season 2, Brady’s future appears to be in jeopardy.
After a noticeable absence in season 3, we may expect to witness Hope’s return in season 4. However, it was revealed in the episode that she was visiting her aunt in another state and was unable to make it to the film in time for Season 3. However, on the way back to Virgin River, she was taken to the hospital after a storm-related mishap.
His illness (macular degeneration) has been steadily worsening during season 3 for Doc Mullins (Hope’s husband). When asked by Entertainment Weekly what we may expect from Hope in season 4, showrunner Sue Tenney said:
We’re focused on her recovery and what she’s struggling with—a traumatic brain injury. Our show doesn’t truly take place in a hospital or rehabilitation center.
Even so, we’ll go all out to find the finest way to get back to where we were before this happened.
In terms of medical constraints, we always stick to them, but at this time we know what we prefer to do, which is intricate emotionally drama-based storylines.” “
According to an interview with the actress, Lynda Boyd will make a comeback in the form of flashbacks for Season 4.
A return to the show has been hinted at by Daniel Gillies as well.
What I will add, somewhat cryptically: the good thing about being the dead husband is that you can appear at any time. That’s all I have time for now.”
A few weeks ago, they asked for proposals for the specials board outside of Jack’s restaurant on the show’s Instagram account, which is an unusual occurrence.
Season 5 of Virgin River is unquestionably in the works. The script is currently being worked on, so we don’t have many details just yet.
It was originally intended to begin production in March 2022, however, Alexandra Breckenridge confirmed that the start date was pushed back.
I don’t know,” the actress stated. “We were scheduled to start in March, but it’s been pushed so I don’t know.” Since I’m pretty much-done filming in the winter, it would be ideal if we could shoot in Vancouver over the summer instead of the winter.
However, it’s still too early to predict whether or not there will be the sixth season.
The showrunner, Sue Tenney, suggested in an interview with Us Weekly that they “want to do as many seasons as we can” before the news. The door is wide open since there is a mountain of content to cover in future seasons.
