What Is The Movie About?

“Till” tells the story of Emmett Till’s murder and the activism of his mother, Mamie Till-Mobley. When Emmett Till, a 14-year-old black teen from Chicago, was murdered by white men in Mississippi in 1995, his mother Mamie insisted on burying his mutilated and decomposing body in an open casket because she believed the entire nation should witness her son’s brutal lynching, saying, “They had to see what I had seen.” The entire country had to bear witness to this.”

According to the official synopsis: “Till is a deeply moving and cinematic film based on the true story of Mamie Till Mobley’s unwavering pursuit of justice for her 14-year-old son, Emmett Till, who was lynched in 1955 while visiting his cousins in Mississippi. Mamie’s moving journey from grief to action demonstrates the universal power of a mother’s ability to change the world.”

Along with the trailer, director Chukwu issued a statement about her approach to telling the story of Emmett and Mamie Till Mobley: “The central conflict of this story is not the traumatic, physical violence inflicted on Emmett – which is why I refused to depict such brutality in the film – but Mamie’s remarkable journey in the aftermath. Till is a love story, so she is grounded by her love for her child.

It was critical for me to ground their affection throughout the film, despite the inherent pain and heartbreak. Till’s cinematic language and tone were deeply rooted in the juxtaposition of loss in the absence of love, inconsolable grief in the absence of joy, and the embrace of Black life alongside the heartbreaking loss of a child.”

When Will The Movie Be Released?

Till will have its world premiere during the first weekend of the 60th New York Film Festival, which runs from September 30 to October 16, 2022. High school students will be invited to special screenings during the festival “to ensure that this film is seen by younger generations.” Till will be released in limited theatres on Friday, October 14. On Friday, October 28, the film will be released in theatres across the United States.
