Ruhl was surprised to pass the psychological screen despite disclosing her history of mental illness and a suicide attempt.

Once selected, the 15 men and 15 women finalists are put into conversation pods, where they can fall in love and get engaged without seeing their future spouse. Ruhl recalls fainting in a dating pod while drinking Champagne but having to continue with on-camera interviews. Eventually, she got engaged to Nick Thompson, and the two were flown to Mexico for a post-engagement vacation with other cast members.

However, behind the scenes, Ruhl’s experience was not what it appeared on the show. Insider reports that producers told her she couldn’t attend a group party due to concerns about COVID-19, resulting in a panic attack. Ruhl’s panic attack was later edited into a storyline about her being upset with Thompson for talking to another woman at the party. Ruhl says she told producers about her mental instability and suicidal thoughts, but they persuaded her to stay.

Ruhl’s experience with “Love Is Blind” has caused lasting damage, according to her. She says she hasn’t felt like herself since before filming and is trying to refind who she is.
