National Gummi Worm Day – July 15, 2022

July 15 is National Gummi Worm Day, and adults still want more flavors, colors, and sizes of gummy worms. Gummi worms have become one of the most popular candies in the world thanks to adults, not children. To get the most out of the squiggly candy, the German word “gummi” means “rubber,” so you can stretch it out before eating it or just chomping on it.

History of National Gummi Worm Day

On July 15, 1981—according to some sources—German confectionary Trolli launched its first Gummi Worms, which are still popular today. Riegel started creating gummi bears in his kitchen in Bonn in 1920 and they quickly became a popular alternative to the reigning gummi candy.

Soft, delicious gelatin bears made by Riegel and his HARIBO firm inspired European circuses and festivals. The bears quickly became a global sensation. Gummi worms were designed by Trolli as a way for children and their parents to have fun with a gross-out aspect. On the anniversary of the birth of the bears in Bonn, some historians believe that Trolli introduced the gummy worms.

Even after the bears became popular, various shapes of gelatin sweets were made, but none of them could compete with the bears until the worms appeared. To honor their accomplishments, Trolli decided to throw a party for the worms.

Another non-bear kind of food was introduced by Trolli in 2004, and it was the roadkill. Gumi squirrels, chickens, and snakes with tire tracks as evidence of their demise were generated by the group of scientists. Kraft Foods had already acquired the Trolli U.S. brand by that time, and they were forced to remove the product from sale the following year due to consumer backlash.
