What is the DualSense Edge Controller?

DualSense Edge is a high-end controller that was first revealed at Gamescom’s Opening Night Live. It appears to be Sony’s answer to Xbox’s Elite controller range. The highly customisable controller, which allows you to set bespoke control mappings and even deactivate specific buttons, was detailed in a PS Blog entry.

Visually, the controller is very similar to the standard DualSense, but with a few additional elements to bring it up to premium standards. As with the Xbox controller, swappable thumb stick caps and adjustable dead zones are expected.

DualSense Edge vs. Xbox Elite Series 2

Let’s look at the specs (so far), dive into its standout features, and see how it compares to the Xbox Elite Series 2, as well as the base DualSense and Xbox wireless controllers, to get a better understanding of the DualSense Edge. We’ll give you a quick rundown, but you can read our full comparison of the two controllers right here on IGN.

Adjustable Trigger Hair Locks

The DualSense Edge, like the Elite line, has adjustable trigger hair locks on the back of the device. This means you can change the travel distance of the controller’s triggers, which is useful when playing competitive shooters or reducing dead zones in racing games.

Button Mapping

On both controllers, you can remap the buttons. The Xbox Elite Series 2 allows you to remap buttons in three different ways, one of which requires you to open the Xbox Accessories app. According to the PlayStation Blog, the DualSense Edge has a “on-controller user interface” with a dedicated Fn button that allows you to adjust your controller’s settings and other things like game volume.

Replacable Stick Modules

The ability to replace the stick modules, which the Xbox Elite controller does not, gives the DualSense Edge a distinct competitive advantage. Although the stick modules will be sold separately, the ability to completely change the thumbsticks is significant, as there have been reports of controller drift since the PS5’s release. The ability to replace the thumbsticks will help the DualSense Edge last longer.

However, both controllers include detachable thumbsticks. The Xbox Elite Series 2 includes six thumbsticks with adjustable tension: two standard, two classic, one tall, and one wide dome. The DualSense Edge will be available with three different stick caps: standard, high dome, and low dome. Check out our review of the Xbox Elite Series 2 Controller for more premium controllers.
