John B., age 17, is a native of The Cut, the impoverished section of the Outer Banks. John Booker Routledge, the narrator, opens the book by describing his upbringing as an only child under the watchful eye of his father.
When he was just three years old, his mother up and moved to Colorado. John B.’s dad disappeared at sea nine months before the Pilot, and nobody ever recovered his body. John B. insists that his father is still alive despite mounting evidence to the contrary.
