Although Jo is unquestionably responsible for my life’s path, as someone who has worked and contributed to The Trevor Project for the past ten years, and as a human being, I find myself compelled to say something at this time,” his statement continued. There is nothing wrong with transgender women being women. Contrary statements rob transgender people of their identity and dignity. They also go against the advice of professional health care associations, which have far more knowledge on the subject than either Jo or I do on this issue at hand. As many as 78% of transgender and nonbinary young people surveyed by The Trevor Project said they had experienced bullying or harassment because of their gender identity. We need to do more to support transgender and nonbinary people, not invalidate their identities and not cause further harm.
“To everyone who now feels that their experience with the books has been tarnished or diminished,” he added. I am truly sorry for causing you so much distress with these remarks. It is my sincere hope that you don’t completely lose what these stories meant to you… Because nobody can match that in my opinion. “I hope that these comments will not tarnish the significance of what it means to you.”
Despite the backlash, Harry Potter critics weighed in on social media about some of Rowling’s other problematic moments—namely, her poor portrayal of Black characters and other people of color in the Wizarding World. Among the most obvious examples was “Cho Chang,” a character with the name.
