Justin Gaethje began wrestling at four and proceeded through high school, becoming a two-time state champion with a 191-9 record. Gaethje became interested in MMA during his freshman year of college and made his amateur debut in 2008, winning by KO Slam.
Gaethje had a 7-0 amateur record before becoming professional and winning his debut at ROF 41. Gaethje then won seven consecutive fights on the regional circuit before joining the World Series of Fighting.

Gaethje avenged his defeats by punching James Vick in the opening round at UFC Fight Night 135. He would defeat Edson Barboza and Donald Cerrone before battling Tony Ferguson for the Interim UFC Lightweight Title on short notice.
Gaethje overwhelmed Tony and led on the judges’ scorecards until he knocked out Ferguson in the fifth round, ending Tony’s 12-fight win streak and capturing the Interim Lightweight Title. At UFC 254, Gaethje defeated Khabib to unify the UFC Lightweight Title.
