As soon as the new MacBook Pro and iMac arrive in 2021, Apple is expected to unveil an updated MacBook Air sometime in 2022.
The next-generation MacBook Air in 2022 may have a fresh look, a new M2 CPU, and more. We’ve compiled a list of all the rumors about the upcoming MacBook Air that we’ve heard so far.

2022 MacBook Air Design
One of the main improvements with the 2022 MacBook Air is expected to be its design, just as the new 24-inch iMac and new MacBook Pros. It has been reported that the new MacBook Air will have a flat-edged design, which would mean that the famous tapered shape of the MacBook Air would be replaced.
With a tapering shape that is thinner upfront and thicker in the back, the MacBook Air has been a fan favorite since its debut by Steve Jobs. Because of this, the MacBook Air appears to be a lot slimmer than it is in reality. Renders supplied by Prosser show a MacBook Air with a flat-edged look similar to the iPad Pro and iPad Air, reportedly produced from real-life pictures.
It has been stated that the 2022 MacBook Air will come in new colors, comparable to those of the 24-inch iMac, by both reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Prosser.
A white keyboard and white bezels around the display are expected to be added to the upcoming MacBook Air, according to reports. Like the 24-inch iMac, this would have white bezels as well.
The new MacBook Air design is sure to be divisive if all of the rumors are true. As we witnessed with the 24-inch iMac, numerous color options and white bezels aren’t to everyone’s taste. Concerns about the MacBook Air design have to wait and see whether Apple makes any changes to solve them.
MacBook Air Processor
Apple’s next-generation M2 processor is slated to make its debut in the next MacBook Air. The M2 chip will be the direct successor to the M1, however, it will be less powerful than the M1 Pro and M1 Max in terms of high-end performance.
In an earlier Bloomberg story, the M2 processor is expected to feature the same number of cores as the M1 but run at a higher clock speed. As a result, the graphics cores will be increased from seven to eight, and the configuration choices will be expanded to nine or 10.
It will be interesting to see if the M2 chip is able to address some of the issues with the M1 chip. The M1 processor, for example, can only handle one external display and two Thunderbolt connections at a time. Time will tell if the M2 chip will help alleviate some of these concerns.
2022 MacBook Air Display
This amazing Liquid Retina XDR (or mini-LED) display technology was extended to the Mac for the first time with 2021’s new 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro models. Several reports claim that the 2022 MacBook Air will also have a mini-LED display.
However, ProMotion is not expected to be included in the MacBook Air’s mini-LED display. Displays on Apple’s iPad Pro, iPhone 13 Pro, and MacBook Pro can refresh at a rate of up to 120Hz thanks to ProMotion, Apple’s variable refresh rate technology.
Is there anything more I should know about the notches? The 2022 MacBook Air, according to some leaks, will also include a notch cut-out, like the next MacBook Pro. Allows Apple to reduce the size of the bezels around the display and put the FaceTime camera inside the notch. It’s unclear if Apple will through with its intentions to give the MacBook Air a notch.
MacBook Air Ports
While connectors like the HDMI connector and SD card slot were brought back in the new MacBook Pro, the 2022 MacBook Air isn’t slated to receive the same treatment. For the upcoming MacBook Air, two Thunderbolt ports are expected to be included on each side.
A positive development, according to Dylandkt, the leaker who correctly anticipated numerous information regarding the new iMac and MacBook Pro models, is that the new MacBook Air will support MagSafe charging. Therefore, two Thunderbolt ports for charging and other uses, as well as a MagSafe port solely for charging would be included in the next MacBook Air, if this is true.

MacBook Air Naming
Finally, according to Prosser and other sources, Apple may no longer refer to its laptops as “MacBook Airs.” Instead, this computer can be referred to as a “MacBook.”
We’ll have to wait and see if this works out. Keeping in mind that Apple’s marketing efforts are usually kept under wraps until the last minute is vital to keep in mind Apple dropped the 12-inch MacBook several years ago, thus it doesn’t currently have an adjective-free MacBook.
MacBook Air Availability and Pricing
So when can you get your hands on the new MacBook? The new MacBook is expected to be released in the middle of 2022, according to several sources. Depending on when you read this, Apple could reveal it during a special event in March or at WWDC in June.
The next MacBook Air is expected to cost “slightly” more than the $999 base model of the current MacBook Air. Most likely, this is because mini-LED displays are more expensive.
Rumors about the 2022 MacBook Air are causing quite a stir. Do you intend to upgrade in the future? The “MacBook Air” or “MacBook,” which do you think Apple will call it? We’d love to hear from you in the comments below.
