Recent events at Hallmark have resulted in cast members leaving the network and long-running shows like Home and Family and Chesapeake Shores being terminated (not to mention the Kitten Bowl). Season 10 of When Calls the Heart hasn’t been renewed or canceled yet, but executive producer Brian Bird has a few cryptic thoughts about the future of the long-running family show.
On the subject of When Calls the Heart, Brian Bird doesn’t appear to know which way Hallmark’s current wind is blowing. According to JLJ Media, WCTH will continue regardless of whether or not the cable network decides to keep the show on the air for Season 10.
If that’s the case, then it doesn’t seem to matter that the show is canceled? There were 12 episodes in Season 8, which ended with a “celebration,” according to Brad Bird, who also said that in Season 9, he’s looking forward to the show branching out and having a “bigger tent.” Despite this, he also made it clear that even if the show is canceled, there are many other avenues for When Calls the Heart to take.
That’s a lot to take in, then! Even though When Calls the Heart has been running for a long time, it has a following. Bird’s assurance that the show will go on regardless of what Hallmark decides to do is also an intriguing wrinkle. This is important because Hallmark has a history of canceling its original series, but Brian Bird says he’s not concerned about the future of Hope Valley even if Hallmark doesn’t want more.
This may have something to do with the GAC Family, as I alluded to earlier. Brian Bird appears to be confident in the show’s potential direction. Previously, GAC Family picked up the spin-off When Hope Calls and now it is airing on the network’s sister network. There have been several characters from Hope Valley who have appeared on the show, including Lori Loughlin, who was let go from the original series after finding a place there.
If When Calls the Heart is renewed, one thing it won’t be doing again? After the conclusion of the Elizabeth-Lucas-Nathan storyline at the end of Season 8, a love triangle is highly unlikely. On the spot, he said, “We can’t milk that any longer.” The show left a lot of things unexplained between Bill putting his affairs in order and Henry still dealing with the consequences of his redemption arc. There will always be “unfinished business in Hope Valley” no matter where the 10th season of When Calls the Heart lands, according to Bird.
