TMZ reports that sources close to the former couple have confirmed to Page Six that James filed for divorce in Colorado earlier this year and that the news of their split largely went unnoticed because of this.
After five years together as a couple, they finally tied the knot in 1997. They went on to have three kids: girls Cali and Marcella, and a boy Castor. In the best interests of their children, the two adults are reportedly still in touch.
Hetfield has said, “Fear was a big motivator in that for me,” in reference to his soon-to-be ex-wife, whom he has credited with helping him get control of his anger and alcohol issues.
When pressed further, he said, “Losing my family, that was the thing that scared me so much, that was the bottom I hit. I was living on my own after my wife had me evicted and I desperately wanted to get back in with her.
She kicked my ass right out of the house, and that scared the s—t out of me,” Hetfield continued. The therapist wasn’t enough, she said; “Hey, you’re not just going to the therapist now and talking about this, you’ve got to go somewhere and sort this s-t out.”
Having had a shaky upbringing himself, he was determined to “make it work” for his family.
My family fell apart when I was a kid; maybe that was just how we did things around here. My parents split up, my mom died, I moved in with my brother, and then I was like, where did all of my stuff go? It sort of disappeared into thin air, and that is something I definitely do not want to happen.
