In the late ’60s and early ’70s, I was renting a warehouse from a guy named Abe Smith. Behind Mr. Smith’s pawn business on Magnolia Street, on Spring Street, was this warehouse. I could use this area to fix up and tune pianos. I had no idea that a local band occasionally rehearsed there. My name, Marshall Tucker, was attached to the key I used to enter this warehouse.
According to the tale I was told, the band originally went by the name The Toy Factory, which was inspired by the band’s original moniker and original lead singer, Toy Caldwell. One of them noticed my name on the key tag and proposed, “Let’s simply name it the Marshall Tucker Band…” I think it’s time we ate something. There was no more discussion. Marshall Tucker Band Were Among The Seminal Bands That Defined Southern Rock
Some of the most influential groups in the development of southern rock were the Allman Brothers Band, the Charlie Daniels Band, and the Marshall Tucker Band. The Marshall Tucker Band’s biggest hit, from their 1973 self-titled debut, was written by founding member and late guitarist Caldwell.
