The rebooted FOX series wrapped its fifth season with an absurd finale, ‘Behind the Eyes,’ in May 2017 — complete with two dramatic narrative twists and a happy ending for Michael Scofield – never consciously un-ridiculous (played by Wentworth Miller).
However, it was announced less than a year later that a “new iteration” was in the works.
So, what happened to Season 6 of Prison Break, and will it ever be released?
This is what we know so far.

Prison Break season 6: Is it happening?
FOX revealed in January 2018 that it was “creating a fresh incarnation” of Prison Break. “It’s still in the early stages of development,” said Michael Thorn, president of entertainment. “However, we’re very excited about it.”
Miller himself has stated an interest in revisiting his role in the future if the conditions are right: “In my opinion, there is always the potential for more. As long as it feels justified, cool, and edgy, and as long as it’s a narrative worth telling.
“It has to be something that will not disappoint the audience but will also satisfy and surprise them. I’m willing to engage in a discussion.”
After the initial excitement for the reboot – sorry,’ reiteration’ – died down, though, things began to go wrong almost immediately.
Despite “demand… from fans… and some of the actors,” series creator Paul Scheuring departed the project, saying he “couldn’t tell you another tale about this bunch of individuals.”
He added, “Perhaps someone else can.” “Or, by chance, I’ll concoct a new and exciting prison escape, but I wouldn’t bet on it.”
The new version of the show was first championed by FOX CEO Dana Walden, but his successor appeared to be less enthusiastic.
Following the network’s merger with Disney in February 2019, Charlie Collier, the newly-appointed CEO of Fox Entertainment, said: “There are no plans to revive Prison Break or any of the other franchises at this time, but if the creators come up with a story that they think is the right time to tell, we’ll be ready to listen because those are franchises of which I’m extremely proud and grateful to have in our stable.
“Nothing is ever dead (remember when Sara was decapitated? ), but for now, the elusive season six is not on the cards,” the Prison Break writers’ room said in August 2019.
However, actor Dominic Purcell (who plays Lincoln on the show) spoke out in 2020 about his expectations for a sixth season, stating how the coronavirus outbreak inspired him to “steely resolve” to see it through.
He stated, “We are all in agreement that if the narrative is worthy, it will be made.”
“I’m quite optimistic that with #socialdistancing and a steadfast commitment to professional views on how to fight this disastrous unprecedented occurrence, we will all triumph over #coronavirus — corporations like #netflix are thirsty for content,” he continued.
Purcell then followed up with another (now-deleted) Instagram status, which added more fuel to the Prison Break fire: “Will there be a sixth season of PB? Yes…..”
