West Michigan had damaging storms and widespread power disruptions on Thursday evening. Power outages have also been more frequent in parts of northern Kent County and much of Ionia County, where storm damage reports have been more frequent.
As the line of storms grew more intense, warnings were issued. A tornado warning was issued for Kent County. On Friday, the National Weather Service will probably undertake damage surveys to ascertain if tornadoes or straight-line winds were responsible for storm damage.
As it proceeded southeast, the line intensified and caused extensive power disruptions in parts of Ionia County. In Eaton County, as the same line passed through, winds of 70 to 80 miles per hour were recorded.

Deadly Crash, Closed Roads
According to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, three persons were killed when an automobile hydroplaned into another east of Cedar Springs during the bad weather. Storms over the region resulted in downed trees and wires as well as wind damage.
At the sheriff’s office building at 701 Ball Ave. in Grand Rapids, the Kent County Sheriff’s Office has established an emergency operations center. According to deputies, Alpine, Plainfield, and Grand Rapids townships seem to have been the most severely affected.

Alpine Avenue in Alpine Township is impassable around 6 Mile Road and 7 Mile Road, according to the sheriff’s office. Sgt. Eric Brunner, a structure was destroyed in that block, and the center of Alpine Avenue had a roof from the building across the street. The public was advised to keep off the road. Brunner said:
“All emergency crews are there along with DTE and Consumers, so we have crews actively working on that,”

He promised that personnel would work all night and make an assessment the next morning. Brunner advised waiting until the morning to contact the sheriff’s office if you have reports of damage that are not emergencies because the call centers were “swamped with calls coming in.” Dial 9-1-1 in case of emergency.
According to Michigan State Police, powerlines crossed US-131 near Post Drive, causing a blockage. They advised the public not to attempt to move the powerlines. In response to reports of structure fires, the Grand Rapids Fire Department went to a residence on Spencer Street off Lafayette Avenue NE.

The storms caused over 199,000 Michigan residents to lose electricity. Customers in the following counties are impacted as of 4:30 a.m.
- Kent County: 59,402 customers without power
- Ionia County: 9,889 customers without power
- Barry County: 957 customers without power
- Ottawa County: 894 customers without power
- St. Joseph County: 818 customers without power
- Montcalm County: 481 customers without power
- Calhoun County: 205 customers without power
