Episode 5 of Yellowjackets raises the stakes because the second season wasn’t already intense enough. In the present-day timeline, Van (Lauren Ambrose) has now joined us, Callie (Sarah Desjardins) is attempting to keep her mother from becoming a suspect, Misty (Christina Ricci) and Walter (Elijah Wood) are getting closer to finding Natalie (Juliette Lewis), and Lottie (Courtney Eaton) wins over an unlikely supporter. And that’s only the start.
Episode 5 (appropriately titled “Two Truths and a Lie”) is jam-packed with pivotal events for the characters in both the present and the past. It also develops plotlines, raises the stakes, and subverts our expectations in the greatest ways conceivable.
Yellowjackets Season 2 Episode 5 Review
This season, Yellowjackets’ recipe works. Each episode moves quickly between plots and timelines, guided by the emotion on screen. “Two Truths and a Lie,” this week’s program, has a rhythm. We’ve reached the stage where these characters are fun to be with, which is the sweet spot for any program.
Van’s inclusion in Tai’s story is excellent. First of all, Lauren Ambrose is a great actress. However, Van and Tai’s supporting relationship in the 1990s timeline is one of the show’s most emotionally charged, so seeing them reunite in the present to exercise Tai’s sleepwalk demon feels fitting.
Lots many ad*lts Van’s home decor and movie rental employment showed her personality. She’s a genuine cinephile, but what’s more interesting is that she seems fascinated with nostalgia and movies from her youth, which could indicate she has problems moving on. Tai’s confession that she can’t ask Van for help for fear of harming her is devastating, but Van’s strange contact with the “other” Tai raises doubts about her relationship to the “evil” alter-ego.
In the 1990s, Lottie’s “woo-woo” gained fans, and many of the girls, especially Van, seem to be connecting with nature and each other. When Shauna and Tai encounter the group in the blizzard, this mystical link makes it harder and harder for the characters and viewers to deny that Lottie’s rituals are making a difference. Shauna and Tai’s snowy conversation is the series’ most excellent. Despite the show’s unusual circumstances, Shauna’s freakout that Lottie and the group are more fascinated with her kid than she is normal for many stressed-out moms-to-be. Sophie Nelisse shines, and Jasmin Savoy Brown is a great co-star. This episode scenario feels most authentic.
Misty’s stories escalate and twist unexpectedly. In the 1990s, her confession to Crystal/Kristen that she shattered the plane’s emergency transmitter causes her “bestie”‘s premature de@th, which will be difficult for Misty to cover up (Crystal exclaimed in terror before her de@th that Misty is a horrible actor).
The show’s use of this unexpected loss to contrast Misty and Walter’s current situation is wonderful. Crystal died from Misty’s closeness. Misty appears frightened about getting close to Walter and dooming him like Crystal. Her history and present stories flow well.
The ad*lt Nat-Charlotte rivalry wasn’t as interesting as Nat and Misty’s last season. As Nat has spent time on Charlotte’s compound, become closer to Lisa, and realized Charlotte isn’t as evil and deluded as she imagined, their chats have become more entertaining.
This narrative is going well, and now that they appear to understand what Travis was trying to tell them before he died, things should get extremely fascinating as the season develops, especially now that Misty is the newest member of the House of Purple.

Javi telling Ben that his “friend” advised him not to return to the group adds another mystery to the strange occurrences of the cabin. The “what’s happening in the woods” game is getting old—visions, marks, strange animal self-sacrifice—we understand it—something odd and dangerous lurks. However, we need some concrete developments—or, heaven forbid, answers—to keep the mystery fresh.
Callie ultimately realizes that Detective CreepFace isn’t who he claims he is, ending the show’s worst storyline. Shauna, Jeff, and Randy’s botched attempt to throw Kevin and Matt off their scent by faking an affair is comical (poor Randy—he has no idea), but it helps advance their storyline. Shauna’s family’s irony of lying to the world, to be honest with one other, is great. Shauna’s present-day story is coming together, and with teen Shauna supposedly going into labor, next week should be dramatic.
