Now is the ideal time for casual audiences to brush up on their fundamental Star Wars knowledge, as “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is set to become the most significant movie in the world.
There is a lot to process, not all of it equally significant. It’s not necessary to be able to debate the relative merits of the “Machete Order” and the “Episode Order” or to have read every recent canonical Star Wars comic from Marvel, but failing to be aware of some crucial details may detract from the new film, which picks up 30 years after the events of 1983’s “Return of the Jedi.”
To assist in bridging the gap with ardent Star Wars fans while in line or watching the movie, here is a primer for those unfamiliar with the franchise — the “padawan,” one might say. It includes a few potential discussion starters.

Of course, there are many other characters in the Star Wars universe, but these are some of the most well-known and significant ones.
Luke Skywalker
Luke Skywalker, the protagonist of George Lucas’ original trilogy, which begins with “Episode IV — A New Hope,” begins as a whining farm child on Tatooine before changing into a rock star Jedi Knight who wears nothing but black.
After Darth Vader amputates Luke’s lightsaber-wielding hand in “Episode V — The Empire Strikes Back,” it is revealed (in one of the most frequently misquoted lines in film history) that Darth Vader is Luke’s father. Luke, who now has an excellent mechanical hand, beats Vader in a duel in “Episode VI — Return of the Jedi,” but only after momentarily sipping from the rage-filled juice box that is the Dark Side of the Force.
Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker
The tragic hero-turned-villain of the Star Wars story. Vader was first introduced to audiences as Emperor Palpatine’s aide. But in the prequels, it was revealed that when he was a small kid, Qui-Gon Jinn and a young Obi-Wan Kenobi saved him from indentured slavery.
There is also some strange information regarding a prophecy about a “Chosen One” and Anakin’s potential immaculate conception, but for the majority of viewers, it suffices to know that Anakin’s decision to join the Dark Side was driven, however erroneously, by his love for Natalie Portman’s Padme. Anakin/Darth Vader saves Luke from the wicked Emperor Palpatine in the pivotal moments of “Return of the Jedi,” redeeming himself before, presumably, being destroyed when the second De@th Star is destroyed.
Obi-Wan Kenobi
Before Darth Vader, Anakin was trained by a much younger Obi-Wan, Luke’s mentor in “A New Hope,” who later hacked off his legs and abandoned him to burn inside a volcano.
Obi-Wan is slain by Vader while attempting to save Princess Leia. Still, he later reappears in the original trilogy, occasionally only as a voice and other times as a “Force ghost,” giving Luke wise counsel.
