Everyone loves a steamy period drama, and Netflix is no exception. This time around, the streamer has taken us back to 1854 where, after marrying Emperor Franz Joseph, a rebellious princess becomes Empress of Austria and enters a world of politics at the Viennese court.
While Netflix hasn’t yet given season two the green light, there’s plenty to draw from after that unexpected cliffhanger, and lavish period dramas often work well for Netflix. Simply inquire at The Crown or Bridgerton.
So with that being said, what can we expect from another season, and when can we expect it? Here’s everything we know about The Empress season two.

Empress Season 2 Release Date
Hold your horses and/or carriages. Unfortunately, it’s way too soon to say whether or not The Empress has done enough to earn a second season given it only premiered last week (September 29).
As with most Netflix shows, its return is dependent upon ratings. So if you want more, settle in and select ‘next episode.’
Just remember, it took Netflix a whole month to announce Bridgerton’s renewal after a massive debut in December 2020, so we’re not worrying just yet.
Empress Season 2 Cast
If The Empress returns, we can almost certainly expect Devrim Lingnau to reprise her role as Elisabeth von Wittelsbach, aka Sisi. After all, what is The Empress if not The Empress?
Joining her, we’d expect to see the following:
• Phillip Froissant as Emperor Franz Joseph
• Melika Foroutan as Sophia
• Elisa Schlott as Helene
• Johannes Nussbaum as Archduke Maximilian
• Jördis Triebel as Princess Ludovika
• Hanna Hilsdorf as Amalia
• Svenja Jung as Louise
• Raymond Tarabay as Ambassadeur De Bourqueney
As always, there’s the potential for some new faces to join too.
Empress Season 2 Plot
At the end of The Empress, Elisabeth is imprisoned within the palace walls for breaking royal protocol (showing compassion) after visiting the iron foundry and giving her shoes to a young girl in need.
As Elisabeth loses hope that anything will be done to assist the poor, she succumbs to despair and joins Franz’s brother Maximillian in partying the days away, further tarnishing her reputation.
Archduchess Sophia, clearly frustrated with the rebellious Empress, suggests Elisabeth return to Bavaria, and Franz, who exchanges some harsh words with his wife and accuses her of consorting with his brother, agrees.
But, before Franz tells Elisabeth to leave, she discovers she is pregnant for the first time. Unfortunately, the Empress is heartbroken and refuses to tell her husband the news.
When Elisabeth is ready to leave, the exit is completely blocked by a large, angry crowd that had gathered at the palace gates to denounce the Emperor. Though the guards request that the carriage be turned around, Elisabeth insists on the gates being opened.
As Franz and Sophia look on, the Empress embraces the crowd and declares, “I see you,” before informing them that she is pregnant.
Will her actions persuade the public? Is she capable of forgiving Franz? Sophia, what are your plans for her now that she’s pregnant?
If Netflix approves it, we can expect all of these questions to be answered in season two.
