Brahms’s Reaction After Finding About Counterpart’s Affair
Throughout much of “Next Generation,” Geordi La Forge required rehabilitation. LeVar Burton played him brilliantly, but he was also treated as a stereotype: a nerdy engineer who couldn’t get the girl and wasn’t given much else to do. His main love interest was Dr. Leah Brahms (Susan Gibney), whom he first met as a hologram.
So the non-holographic Brahms was quite disturbed when she learned about her digital counterpart’s affair with this unknown engineer. This was always an odd storyline, as Burton admitted in my recent interview with the cast.
“Geordi was a stalker,” Burton joked. “He stalked that woman, you know.” That is not acceptable.”
“He made a holodeck version of that woman,” he continued. “And that is incorrect! It’s simply incorrect. And the chance to right that wrong was central to my desire to return and do it again.”

Do We Get To Know What Geordi Is Up To?
We finally get to see what Geordi is up to in this week’s episode. He is now Commodore La Forge, in charge of the fleet museum, and the father of two daughters, Sidney (the Titan’s pilot) and Alandra. Torn between his duties as a friend and as a parent, Geordi is faced with a new level of complexity.
“Leave it to you, Jean-Luc,” Geordi says, “to turn fatherhood into an intergalactic incident.” This is an apt line, especially given that Beverly never told Jean-Luc about Jack because Jean-Luc attracts trouble.
When Jean-Luc mentions that their precarious situation is “life or death,” Geordi responds sarcastically, “It’s always life or death, Jean-Luc.” When was the last time it wasn’t? That was fine back when I chose to place my life in your hands. But you have just put my daughter in grave danger.”
Mica Burton posted about the series on Twitter. You can see the Tweet below.

Geordi’s journey is similar to that of many people who become parents. They feel free to be reckless when they are younger and childless. But, as a parent, the calculations change when you’re responsible for someone who didn’t ask to be born. Geordi has contributed to the galaxy’s salvation. Now, all he wants is to keep his children and himself safe.
“I can’t help you and protect them at the same time,” Geordi tells Jean-Luc. This is a stinging retort to Jean-plea Luc’s for assistance. So another close friend of Jean-has Luc’s informed him that he is a danger to their children.
Sidney’s Confrontation With Her Father
Sidney’s confrontation with her father implies that Geordi was harsh on her because she chose to be a pilot rather than an engineer — as if her choice was a direct rejection of him. But Geordi’s own past returns to haunt him: Sidney considers the Titan crew to be her family, just as Geordi did the Enterprise crew. That is the example Geordi provided.
It’s challenging to take that back now. Later in the episode, Geordi regrets not jumping at the chance to help his friends the way the younger Geordi would have.
The creative team behind “Picard” clearly put much thought into correctly placing these characters in new spaces rather than simply relying on the versions we’ve come to know and love.
That includes Data or whichever version of him the team saves in this episode. Altan Soong, a character from previous seasons of “Picard,” is shown to have died, but not before creating an android that combines Lal, B-4, Lore, and Data.

How Brent Spiner Resurrecting The Data
Of course, a proper “Next Generation” reunion would have been impossible without Brent Spiner resurrecting Data. But, despite his two previous deaths, “Picard” does it unusually. It gives us the most human Data yet, one who has aged and struggles with multiple personalities. This android contains Lore, as well as the childlike Lal and B-4.
In some ways, that describes all of us. We are all battling our inner Lore — the ambitious, mischievous, and morally dubious tendencies. We also have needs from childhood that never go away, such as approval and love.
