Scream, directed by the late Wes Craven and released in theaters for the first time in 1996, was an instant hit with viewers thanks to its innovative mix of gore, humour, and meta-commentary. Additionally, the film marked the debut of Ghostface, who would go on to become one of the most famous antagonists in the annals of horror film history.
Scream 6, also known as Scream VI, starring Jenna Ortega and released earlier this year to widespread critical and economic success. The film received an impressive 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $168.8 million at the box office. Even though the authors, directors, and Ghostfaces have all changed over the course of the series’ existence, the momentum has been maintained, and a seventh installment is currently in the planning stages. So, in summary, the following is what we have learned up until this point.

Scream 6 was confirmed in February 2022 and released in March 2023, 14 months after the previous film. If the seventh film receives an equally quick green light, we may see Ghostface again next year.
Scream 7 Cast
We haven’t heard who will be in the Scream 7 cast because of the actors’ strike, but we can expect the major four stars from the sixth film to return, considering that they all survived Ghostface (almost). The four are as follows:
- Melissa Barrera as Sam Carpenter
- Jenna Ortega as Tara Carpenter
- Jasmin Savoy Brown as Mindy Meeks-Martin
- Mason Gooding as Chad Meeks-Martin
It’s also highly likely that we’ll be seeing Courteney Cox back as Gale Weathers. The Friends star has appeared in every Scream film in the franchise, and she survived the events of the sixth movie. This is also true for Hayden Panettiere’s Kirby Reed, who first met Ghostface in 2011’s Scream 4. While we won’t be hearing about casting for a while, we’ll be sure to keep this space updated when we do.

Scream 7 Plot: What Will It Be About?
At the time of writing, there are no official storyline specifics for Scream 7, but we do know that there will be a new assailants in the form of Ghostface – and they will no likely continue the killer’s terrifying modus operandi of terrorizing their victims by phone before striking.
Detective Wayne Bailey, Quinn Bailey, and Ethan Landry were all killed after being discovered to be the killers in Scream 6, seeking vengeance on those who murdered Richie in the previous film.
Richie and his Ghostface sidekick Amber were both fans of the highly meta Stab movies, the fictitious in-universe film franchise that follows the “real” killings in the Scream films. With Scream 6 introducing three Ghostface killers, who’s to say the seventh film won’t feature four? Whatever the case may be, whoever dons the mask this time will undoubtedly be after Sam and Tara.
Unless, of course, the fan idea that Sam will be the murderer comes true; after all, she has grappled with the notion that she is the daughter of the original Ghostface, Billy. Could she succumb to peer pressure and follow in her father’s footsteps? Only time will tell… We’ll keep you updated when story details become available, but like with the actors, there may be a bit of a wait given the ongoing writers’ strike.
