Hip-hop artist YNW Melly from Florida was detained and accused of two charges of first-degree murder in February 2019. The rapper and another rapper, YNW Bortlen, allegedly killed two of their friends and staged the crime scene to resemble a drive-by shooting, according to the police.
YNW Melly went on trial in Florida in June 2023 and maintained his innocence throughout. The judge declared a mistrial, but a new trial for the rapper is anticipated for the fall. If Melly is found guilty of first-degree murder, she might be sentenced to death.
Melly, who was born Jamell Demons, was involved in a critically dangerous criminal case just as her career was taking off. A month prior to being detained, the then-19-year-old from the little South Florida town of Gifford put out the mixtape We All Shine, which included Kanye West.
His biggest success at the time, the eerie 2017 single “Murder on My Mind,” had just achieved gold status. It was certified six times multi-platinum by January 2022.
Here is a brief summary of Melly’s journey, who is now 24 years old, from posting freestyles on SoundCloud to working with Kanye West and Young Thug to facing murder charges. See the full post for more details…
Florida Rapper YNW Melly Accused of Killing 2 Friends
A mistrial was declared on Saturday 19 August, in the South Florida case against rapper YNW Melly for the alleged 2005 murders of two of his pals due to a deadlocked jury.
After three days of debate, the 12-member panel was unable to agree on a decision. Prosecutors in Broward County, who had originally requested the death penalty, are probably going to decide to retry the case in front of a fresh jury. To find a prisoner guilty or innocent, the jury must reach a unanimous decision.

When the jury announced they were deadlocked, Broward Circuit Judge John Murphy twice ordered them to continue debating but gave in after they returned a third time. YNW Melly, real name Jamell Demons, shot Christopher Thomas Jr. and Anthony Williams while they were all in a Jeep.
Williams and Thomas belonged to the YNW collective, which went by the names YNW Sakchaser and YNW Juvy, respectively. Defense lawyers argued that the story lacks credibility because Demons and the victims were close friends, despite the prosecution’s assertion that the shooting was a gang-related incident.
Prosecutors claim that on October 26, 2018, Demons, Williams, and Thomas were in a Jeep driven by Cortland Henry, also known as YNW Bortlen, following a recording session in Fort Lauderdale. Williams and Thomas were allegedly shot to death by demons.
Henry will face a separate trial despite being charged as an accomplice in the crime. Prosecutors claim that after killing Williams and Thomas, Demons and Henry drove the bodies to a location close to the Everglades where they shot at Henry’s Jeep from the outside to give the impression that Williams and Thomas had been the victims of a drive-by shooting.
Rappers YNW Melly and YNW Bortlen are accused with two charges of murder in the deaths of other rappers. Ballistics tests, according to the prosecution, suggest that the two were shot from inside the Jeep. Defense attorneys emphasized that the gun was never found.

They also informed the jury that YNW Melly’s motive for the crime was not immediately evident. After breaking out in 2017, YNW Melly collaborated with Kanye West on “Mixed Personalities,” which was published in January 2019—a month before Demons, 24, was detained on suspicion of murder.
